Sen. Barack Obama (D-Illinois) addressed Indian issues at campaign stops in New Mexico on Friday.
Obama reiterated pledges to appoint an Indian adviser in the White House and to hold regular meetings with tribal leaders. He said he would respect tribal sovereignty and work to empower Indian communities.
Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-New Mexico) and former President Bill Clinton have been campaigning in New Mexico as well. Neither have talked about Indian issues, according to news reports.
New Mexico, home to 19 Pueblos, two Apache tribes and parts of the Navajo Nation, holds its primary on Tuesday. About 10 percent of the population is Native.
Obama has been endorsed by a handful of Pueblo and Navajo leaders. But Navajo President Joe Shirley Jr. and former Navajo president Peterson Zah are backing Clinton.
