Republican Tom McClintock defeated Democrat Charlie Brown in a tight U.S. House race for the 4th Congressional district in California.
As a state lawmaker, McClintock earned praise for his views on tribal sovereignty. When he ran for governor in the state's 2003 recall election, he received $2.7 million in tribal contributions. He endorsed the four tribal gaming propositions that were approved by voters in February.
McClintock replaces Rep. John Doolittle
(R-California), who retired amid an investigation into his ties to jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
