Members of the Lumbee Tribe, of North Carolina went to the polls on Tuesday to decide four council races.
Only one incumbent retained his seat while the others were taken by newcomers. Two races with very close counts could be affected by ballot challenges.
The tribe continues to pursue federal recognition. Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-North Carolina), one of the tribe's biggest champions, lost her bid for re-election though Democrat Kay Hagan also backs Lumbee recognition.
