The last of six Native inmates who broke out of a prison last month was captured on the Star Blanket Cree Nation in Saskatchewan on Tuesday evening.
Ryan Agecoutay, 25, was taken into custody after a standoff that lasted several hours, a witness told CBC News. "They surrounded the Star Blanket village on the west end of the reserve and they were evacuating the village and just everyone was quite afraid for their safety and we were calling everyone that we could find to let them know to keep their doors locked," Noel Starblanket said.
Agecoutay is said to be a leader in a Native gang. He was being held on an aggravated assault charge when he and five other Native inmates broke out of the Regina Correctional Centre on August 24.
One escapee, Daniel Wolfe, said Native inmates are being denied access to elders and aren't allowed to take part in ceremonies at the prison.
