The Duwamish Tribe of Washington is putting the final touches on its new longhouse. The Duwamish Longhouse & Cultural Center will be the tribe's first permanent home. The last Duwamish longhouse was burned by settlers over 100 years ago. The longhouse is located in the Port of Seattle. Up until now, the tribe held its meetings in an open space in a park. Meanwhile, the tribe is in federal court seeking recognition. The tribe won a favorable decision in the final days of the Clinton administration in January 2001 but it was reversed by the Bush administration in September 2001. Get the Story:
