The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska hosted Democratic Senate candidate Scott Kleeb on Thursday.
Tribal leaders and members said one of their biggest issues is access. They want to be able to talk to their politicians and get a response, citing help the tribe has received from Sen. Ben Nelson (D).
"Nelson's the only one who's actively lending his ear," said Louis Houghton Jr., a tribal council member, the Associated Press reported.
Kleeb's opponent is former governor and former Agriculture secretary Mike Johanns (R). Leah Hunter, a tribal member who chairs the Thurston County Democratic Party said "there was no relationship" with Johanns when he was governor.
The seat is open because Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Nebraska) is retiring.
