Pomo woman named director of Senate Indian Affairs

Allison Binney, a member of the Sherwood Valley Band of Pomo Indians, has been named staff director for the Democrats on the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.

Binney, a graduate of Arizons State University College of Law, has been serving as the general counsel for the committee. She replaces Sara Garland, who is leaving to work for Sen. Kent Conrad (D-North Dakota).

“I’ve worked with Allison for a number of years, and she’s distinguished herself as an expert in American Indian issues and law,” said Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota), the chairman of the committee.. “I’m pleased to see Allison step into this leadership role. She is a steady hand and capable leader who will help navigate our effort to address the chronic shortages of health care, housing, law enforcement and education that we face in Indian Country.”
