Lawrence Guerro, a member of the Navajo Nation who was injured in Iraq, returned to his home in New Mexico this past weekend.
Guerro, 26, is a specialist in the Army. He suffered injuries to his right-leg, which eventually had to be amputated above the knee, when a bomb exploded on the streets of Baghdad on May 25, 2007.
After surgery at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C., Guerro spent several months in therapy and recovery at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. He was finally escorted back to the Alamo portion of the Navajo Nation on Saturday.
“Guerro sacrificed a lot for the nation,” Navajo Nation Council Speaker Morgan said. “He is definitely a hero and has made sacrifices for his family, our country, and the great Navajo Nation – welcome home!”
Guerro is the third known injured Navajo soldier from Iraq. The Navajo Nation has lost at least five members in Iraq and Afghanistan.
