A judge for the Mashantucket Tribal Nation of Connecticut rejected a petition filed by tribal member that sought to reverse $40 million in budget cuts.
Upwards of 900 tribal members signed the petition. But Judge Thomas J. Londregan said it was not properly presented under the tribal constitution's rules for a referendum.
The tribe has laid off 200 employees as part of an attempt to save money.
