Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. is holding six meetings across the Navajo Nation to drum up support for his government reform plan.
Shirley wants to reduce the Navajo Nation Council from 88 delegates to just 24. He wants the president to have line item veto authority over appropriations passed by the council.
The first meeting was held in Shiprock, New Mexico, on Friday. Nearly 400 tribal member signed a petition to put the issues on the November ballot, The Farmington Daily Times reported.
Council leaders have criticized Shirley's proposals.
