Larry Baca awarded top Justice Department honor

Larry Baca, a member of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma, received the U.S> Attorney General's Medallion at a ceremony on Wednesday.

Baca, a graduate of Harvard Law School, was the first American Indian hired through the Attorney General's Honor Law Program in 1976 and was the first American Indian hired for the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice. He helped file landmark lawsuits affecting individual Indian rights to run for public office and gain access to educational opportunities.

Baca most recently served as deputy director of the Office of Tribal Justice at DOJ. He retired this spring.
