Blackfeet homes still infested with dangerous mold

More than 150 homes on the Blackfeet Nation in Montana are infested with a dangerous mold that can cause health and safety problems.

A new study from the University of Montana found a high level of toxins in three-quarters of the 36 homes tested. Most of the toxins came from black mold, which can lead to cancer, asthma, kidney failure, respiratory problems and other ailments.

The study found that 71 percent of residents reported mold-related symptoms. In addition, 37 percent of the children were suffering from asthma.

More than 150 families filed a lawsuit against Blackfeet Housing Authority and the Department of Housing and Urban Development over the faulty homes. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the complaint against HUD but said the BHA could be sued.

The BHA is seeking a rehearing. Other tribes are interested in the case because they have similar housing ordinances that opened up the BHA to suit.
