Leaders of the Navajo Nation like to travel. Facing a federal investigation for a trip to Hawaii, tribal officials have been in Las Vegas and Washington, D.C.
Most of the Navajo Nation Council is in Las Vegas for the National Finals Rodeo from December 6-15 But President Joe Shirley Jr. barred his staff from attending, The Gallup Independent reported.
Council delegates also went to DC for the Bureau of Indian Affairs tribal budget advisory council meeting earlier this month. They met with federal officials to discuss upcoming budgets for the agency.
The Interior Department's Inspector General is investigating whether the tribe misused federal funds in connection with a trip to the National Indian Education Association conference in Hawaii in October.
The tribe sent about 50 representatives.
