South Dakota tribes awarded grants for scenic byway

Three South Dakota tribes have been awarded grants from the Department of Transportation for projects along the Native American Scenic Byway.

The Yankton Sioux Tribe will use $286,656 to renovate a formal tribal hall and reopen it as a museum and cultural center. The Lower Brule Sioux Tribe will use $74,000 for the to re-create a traditional Arikara earthlodge dwelling to serve as a historical education center.

Another $120,320 goes the Oglala Sioux Tribe to develop a tribal scenic highway plan to improve access to historic sites.

The Native American Scenic Byway crosses the Crow Creek, Lower Brule, Cheyenne River, and Standing Rock reservations in North Dakota and South Dakota.
