Bill seeks to improve Bureau of Indian Affairs schools

A bill that will enable tribes to issue bonds for school construction was introduced last Thursday.

The Indian School Construction Act affirms federal government's responsibility for repairing, renovating and replacing Bureau of Indian Affairs schools. It creates a pilot program to improve schools through a modernization bonds program.

The bill was introduced as S.2367 in the Senate by Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota) and Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-New Mexico). It was referred to the Senate Finance Committee.

The House version, H.R.4243, is sponsored by Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D-North Dakota), Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas) and Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-South Dakota). It was referred to Ways and Means Committee, the and Labor Committee and the Natural Resources Committee.
