Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe to elect chairman

The Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts is electing a new chairman on Sunday.

Chairman Donald Widdiss is seeking another three-year term. He is being challenged by Cheryl Andrews-Maltais.

Widdiss says one of his main achievements was a memorandum of agreement with the town of Aquinnah over sovereignty and land use issues. If he is re-elected, he intends to push for one of the commercial casinos that the state might legalize.

Andrews-Maltais is the tribe's historic preservation officer. She believes the current administration is too distant from the tribal membership.
