A documentary about the Miss Navajo pageant premieres tonight on PBS.
"Miss Navajo" follows Crystal Frazier as she competes for the 2005-2006 crown.
Filmmaker Billy Luther, who is Navajo, said Frazier wasn't the typical beauty pageant contestant.
"What struck me first was that she was a tomboy," Luther tells The Farmington Daily Times. "I was making a film about what's not the typical beauty pageant, so I wanted someone who was not the typical contestant."
Frazier, who won the title of Miss Northern Navajo in 2004-2005, showcased her traditional talents and Navajo language skills for the competition. "Yes, they butcher sheep," Luther said.
