Church stops Native dance group from performing

A Christian church in Manitoba stopped a Native dance group from performing at a Habitat for Humanity ceremony on Tuesday.

Kim Houle and her family were invited to dance at the ceremony. The 45-year-old mother of 10 moved into a Habitat for Humanity home in July.

But as she was dressing her kids for the performance, the Church of the Rock in Fort Garry said the group couldn't go on. "I was very angry, I was really hurt to have to explain to my kids that this prejudice is still going on," Houle told The Winnipeg Sun.

The church said it canceled the performance because Native beliefs don't fit in with the Christian faith. Habitat for Humanity gave the church the right to veto any performances.
