Charles Shay, a member of the Penobscot Nation of Maine, is being presented with France's highest military and civilian honor today.
Shay, 83, will receive the National Order of the Legion of Honor for his service in World War II. He helped liberate France and was a prisoner of war.
"It’s important to me because I’m trying to promote the history of my family, and I’m trying to bring attention to the Native American veterans that served," Shay told The Bangor Daily News. Shay later served in the Korean War.
Shay will be presented the award today at the home of the French ambassador in Washington, D.C. On Wednesday, will be a special guest during French President Nicolas Sarcozy's joint address to Congress.
