Prairie Island Tribe wants nuclear waste removed

The Prairie Island Indian Community of Minnesota supports the federal government's permanent nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain in Nevada.

The repository, which has been delayed by funding and planning issues as well as opposition from the state of Nevada, would store waste from nuclear facilities across the nation. One of them is located 600 yards from the tribe's reservation.

For that reason, tribal council member Ron Johnson was in Washington, D.C., yesterday to urge lawmakers to push for the project's success. He said the waste at the Xcel Energy facility poses a health and safety risk to the tribe.

Yucca Mountain is located on the treaty lands of the Western Shoshone Nation. More than a dozen tribes are located near the project site.
