The Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians and the La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians are among the hardest hit by fires in southern California.
The Poomacha Fire hit both reservations, destroying homes and sending residents into shelters.
At Rincon, 65 homes, trailers and other buildings have been destroyed. At La Jolla, at least 41 homes have been destroyed.
“This has just shocked the entire community,” La Jolla Chairman Tracy Nelson told The San Diego Union-Tribune. “We're just trying to pull ourselves together.”
Other reservations hit by the fires include the Yuina, San Pasqual, Pala, Capitan Grande, Mesa Grande, Santa Ysabel, Barona, Jamul and Inaja-Cosmit reservations. More than 26,000 acres of tribal land have burned, according to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
