State audit finds problems at Chief Leschi Schools

The Washington State Auditor said staff at the Chief Leschi Schools on the Puyallup Reservation falsified and misrepresented teacher data.

The audit said a teacher was overpaid more than $5,100 due to several errors made by the school's human resource director. The issue occurred during the 2005-2006 school year but other financial problems have been found at the school in prior years, The Tacoma News Tribune reported.

The school is part of the Bureau of Indian Affairs system. But the tribe has an agreement with the Puyallup School District to receive certain state funds.

The state provides about 20 percent of the school's $12 million, while the remaining 80 percent comes from the BIA.
