Rosebud Sioux teen to speak at United Nations

LaBradford Eagle Deer, a 16-year-old member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, will speak at the United Nations in New York City today.

Eagle Deer is one of six teens chosen to speak on the 20th International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. He and another teen will represent the United States.

"Poverty creates a sense of hopelessness in a person," Eagle Deer told The Rapid City Journal. "And that is why suicide, addiction, dropout and crime rates are so high in poverty-stricken areas on our reservation, as well as other areas in the world."
