Chickasaw deal with Chinese automaker on hold

The Chickasaw Nation's deal to bring a Chinese automaker to the U.S. has been put on hold due to political issues in China.

The tribe partnered with Nanjing Motors in July 2006. The two hoped to open a manufacturing plant to revive the British sports car brand MG.

"We have sent a trade mission to China,” Neal McCaleb, the head of Chickasaw Nation Enterprises, said at a conference on Tuesday, The Oklahoman reported. "We have been a player with Nanjing Motors to bring MG to Oklahoma.”

The tribe also signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Slovakia to talk about trade and economic opportunities, said McCaleb, the former head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The tribe's budget has doubled in recent years due to gaming and other economic projects.
