White Earth Band of Ojibwe welcomes adoptees

The White Earth Band of Ojibwe Indians in Minnesota is welcoming home tribal members who were adopted.

About 100 adoptees have registered for the Welcome Home Gathering this weekend. They represent dozens of tribal members who were adopted by families off the reservation.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, between 25 percent and 35 percent of Indian children were placed up for adoption before passage of the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978. In Minnesota, the American Indian Policy Center estimates one in four Indian children were adopted.
