The Tanka Bar, an energy bar made of buffalo meat and berries, debuts this weekend at the Black Hills Pow Wow in Rapid City, South Dakota.
The bar is the brainchild of Mark Tilsen and Karlene Hunter. The two Oglala Sioux entrepreneurs formed Native American Natural Foods to create a product that promotes health and tradition.
"That's an exact fit for the brand we're trying to build," Tilsen tells The Rapid City Journal.
Tanka Bar is 70 percent buffalo meat -- only from bison in the Plains -- and 30 percent cranberries - from bogs in Wisconsin. There's some salt and other flavoring in the product.
Sales in Rapid City start on Friday, which has been declared "Tanka Bar Day" by the mayor. Shipping to retail outlets and wholesalers is expected by October 15.
