Paiute families settle lawsuit with school district

Two Paiute families have settled their discrimination lawsuit against a school district in California.

The families alleged Indian children were being singled out for discipline at Bishop Union Elementary School. The lawsuit stemmed from an incident in which an Indian students were pushed to the ground by a police officer at the school.

The district admitted no wrongdoing but promised to review its procedures. The office in question won't be allowed to patrol the school anymore.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, which sued on behalf of the families, Indian children were 67 percent of students punished and suspended despite being about 17 percent of the student body.
