The Navajo Nation Board of Education fired superintendent Dr. Tommy Lewis for lack of performance.
Board Vice President Rebecca Benally said Lewis failed to take action to improve the tribe's education system.
"We had a strategic plan that was not implemented. It is months behind," she told The Gallup Independent.
"We expected a lot from the superintendent, to perform and work with the board, and we felt like his progress was a little bit slow," added board member Kathryn Arviso.
The tribe is restructuring the Department of Dine Education and is planning to take more control of public and federal schools on the reservation.
