The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner: "Alaskans well know the extent of Sen. Stevens’ influence in this state. Alaskans have returned him to Washington, D.C., every six years for several decades because they value what he does. Alaskans also know, without having the details, that Sen. Stevens is connected in ways large and small to many industries and people. They know the senator plays hardball with colleagues at times.
We’ll all learn the details of this federal inquiry soon enough. Until we do, however, calls for the senator to step aside from committee positions are premature."
The Anchorage Daily News: "It's possible Sen. Stevens did nothing wrong in this case. Federal authorities will comb through the files and compare improvements made to bills paid. If everything balances out, Sen. Stevens may be in the clear on this one.
Nonetheless, his reputation has been tarnished. During his three decades in the Senate, his power over legislation and funding has touched every corner of the state. Once heralded as Alaskan of the Century, and rightfully so, he made misjudgments about arranging his personal and financial affairs. He did not keep a healthy distance from those who cultivated his favor and would benefit from his influence."
