Parole board votes to commute Lakota man's sentence

The South Dakota Board of Pardons and Paroles voted unanimously on Thursday to commute the prison sentence of Timothy Caffrey, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

Caffrey was sentenced to life in prison without parole. He has served 27 years for pleading guilty to manslaughter for the shooting death of his adoptive father in 1981. Caffrey was 17 at the time.

It's now up to Gov. Mike Rounds (R) to accept or reject the commutation request. Two previous requests have been rejected.
