The Nooksack Tribe of Washington hosted its 11th annual sobriety powwow on Sunday.
An estimated 200 dancers participated in the powwow. Some traveled from as a far away as British Columbia, Canada.
“My generation is trying to help this generation to find a better outlet in life than using drugs and alcohol to hide the pain,” Dennis Leon of the Sto:lo Nation of B.C. told The Bellingham Herald.
In other Washington powwow news, the Seafair Indian Days Powwow in Seattle celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center. Special tribute was paid to the late Bernie Whitebear, who helped reclaim the property in 1970.
Elsewhere in the state, the Washington History Museum hosted the second annual Northwest Native Arts Market and Festival on Saturday and Sunday.
