Traditional healers help Alaska Native soldiers

With record numbers of Alaska Native soldiers set to return from the Middle East, traditional healers are ready to help them readjust to life in their communities.

Alaska Natives from 81 communities are part of the largest Alaska National Guard deployment since World War II. They have been serving in Iraq and Afghanistan for almost a year.

"Honoring them and welcoming them home as a veteran isn't enough," traditional healer Kenny Timberwolf told The Anchorage Daily News. "It has to go a lot deeper."

Since access to Western health care is limited in rural villages, sweat lodges, acupuncture, talking circles and other ceremonies will be used to help the returning soldiers.
