Fire burns more than 23,000 acres at Pine Ridge

A fire on the Pine Ridge Reservation has burned more than 23,000 acres since Saturday.

The Stampede Fire has burned 17,000 acres of a pasture used by the tribe's buffalo herd. Only four older animals have been found dead but the rest have lost a major source of food. The Defenders of Wildlife, a national conservation group, and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe have offered donations for the herd.

The fire was 80 percent contained as of Monday night, a fire management officer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs said. An investigative team is trying to determine the cause.
