Editorial: Rock is rightfully in hands of Mohegan Tribe

"Cochegan Rock, nearly 70-feet high and weighing about 6,000 tons, may be the largest free-standing rock in New England. It has a special place in Mohegan tribal history, the place where Chief Uncas would meet with his tribal council.

Now it and the land around it are tribal property and that is how it should be.

The Connecticut Rivers Council, a Boy Scout organization, sold the property for $200,000, but will be allowed to continue using it for Scout activities. The tribe will be able to provide the maintenance for the site, located near Interstate 395 in Montville, that the Scouts could not."
