NPS won't treat 'dune dwellers' group like a tribe

The National Park Service won't put a group of "dune dwellers" in Massachusetts in the same category as tribes.

The residents of 19 cottages in the Cape Cod National Seashore sought a traditional cultural property designation in the hopes of staying in their dwellings. But NPS said the group failed to show they have existed as a distinct community from historic times to the present.

The cottages were built before the Cape Cod shoreline became a federal property. They are eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
