The Yakama Nation of Washington is celebrating the acquisition of an ancient village and burial site known as Lyle Point.
The tribe lost the site to non-Indian settlers and to the Bonneville Dam. It was further threatened by a proposed housing development.
With the help of the Trust for Public Land, the tribe bought the land for $2.4 million. "This is a great day for the Yakamas -- to get the land returned back for access to our fishing right areas," Chairwoman Lavina Washines said in a statement.
