Charles Old Bear, the hereditary chief of the Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa, is urging Gov. Chet Culver (D) to veto a bill that recognizes tribal court decisions.
Old Bear said tribal members weren't consulted. He said the bill could alter the tribal constitution without approval by tribal members.
The bill allows state judges to recognizes decisions made by the Meskwaki courts but does not require enforcement of the decisions. It is on Culver's desk awaiting action.
