Lakota graduate told to remove eagle feather

A Lakota graduate of Northeastern State University in Oklahoma was told to remove his eagle feather during commencement ceremonies.

Warren Hawk received his master’s degree in education on Saturday. He said organizers threatened to call campus police if he didn't remove the feather from his outfit.

Hawk complied with the request. But when he walked on stage to receive his degree, he put the feather back on.

"A couple of students did comply, and it was really sad that they didn’t really get to wear their feathers at all," he told The Tahlequah Daily Press.

NSU has a higher percentage of American Indian students than any other university in the nation, according to the paper.
