Native Americans in North Carolina are petitioning the state to designate a portion of Andrew Jackson Highway as the American Indian Freeway.
Andrew Jackson Highway, U.S. 74, is a dark reminder of the seventh president who forced southeastern tribes on the Trail of Tears. Efforts to change the name have failed.
But since a new portion of the highway is under construction, advocates want to designate a portion that runs through Robeson County as American Indian Freeway. The county is home to a large number of Native Americans, mainly members of the
Lumbee Tribe.
