Indian student makes finals in poetry competition


Fantasia Lonjose, a 17-year-old member of the Zuni Tribe of New Mexico, made it to the finals of the national Poetry Out Loud competition in Washington, D.C., this week.

Lonjose, a senior at Santa Fe Indian School, didn't place in the competition. But she was one of just 12 students nationwide who made it to the finals.

Lonjose has wowed audiences at home with her performances. She has won the state finals for the second year in a row.

Lonjose is a Gates Millennium Scholar and plans to attend the University of Arizona at Tucson in the fall.
