Hopi Tribe removes chief judge following assault

The Hopi Tribe of Arizona has removed its chief judge after he was arrested on disorderly conduct and assault and battery charges.

The council voted 11-6, with 3 abstentions, to remove Judge Gary LaRance. He allegedly assaulted another man at a softball game and then failed to turn up for his arraignment.

"Judge LaRance has lost the trust and confidence of the Hopi public in his ability to act impartially in the furtherance of his judicial duties and to enforce the laws of the Hopi Tribe," the council said in a statement, The Gallup Independent reported.

A bench warrant was issued for LaRance, who has to appear in court on May 7.
