The Yakama Nation of Washington plans to debut a free public transportation system this summer.
The tribe received a $490,890 federal grant to start the system. It will be open to all residents of the reservation.
The tribe is working with the nonprofit organization People for People to develop the system. Bus service will help residents without transportation get around the reservation.
According to an August 2006 survey by the tribe and People for People, 57 percent lacked a vehicle and 30 percent needed transportation to access social services.
