Sculpture of Spokane Chief Garry vandalized

A sculpture of Spokane Chief Garry has been repeatedly vandalized, causing residents of east Spokane to debate its future.

The sculpture was built in 1979 to honor Chief Garry, who died in 1892. Over the years, Garry's fingers have been repeatedly broken and his nose was recently removed by vandals.

The city has always repaired the damage but the Chief Garry Park Neighborhood Council says it might be time to put up a new one. Removing the statue and replacing it with a bronze casting could be very costly and damaging to the park.

In related Spokane news, the city council ended an archaeology services agreement with Eastern Washington University. The tribe criticized the school for mishandling important sites.
