The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians of North Carolina reclaimed a key part of its history on Monday.
The tribe bought a 71-acre site that contains Cowee Mound, one of the undisturbed Indians mounds in the state. Cowee was the tribe's economic hub and was home to a Cherokee village until the late 1700s.
The tribe worked with the Land Trust for the Little Tennessee River to purchase the site from a private owner.
