Two murals, including one that depicts the lynching of an Indian man, won't be removed from a historic courthouse in Idaho.
Lawmakers were concerned about the murals because they will be using the courthouse while the state Capitol undergoes a renovation. But a task force has decided to keep them up, disappointing at least one lawmaker.
"The Legislature has not been the most sensitive toward Native American issues here anyway," Rep. George Sayler, a Republican whose district includes the Coeur d'Alene Reservation, told the Associated Press.
The murals were commissioned by the government during the Depression era. Tribal leaders suggested the placement of interpretive signs.
