Omaha Reservation boundaries a source of dispute

The boundaries of the Omaha Reservation in Nebraska are again generating debate.

The tribe maintains the reservation includes several towns where non-Indians settled. But some local officials say the tribe lost the land.

The issue has led to law enforcement and jurisdictional disputes. The latest involves an alcohol tax the tribe tried to impose on businesses in Pender.

The businesses went to court, saying the town is not part of the reservation. A federal judge issued a temporary injunction against the tribe.

The tribe says only Congress can diminish a reservation. Attorney Leonika Charging said that hasn't happened in the Omaha case.
