Mississippi Choctaws regain historic site from state

The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians is regaining one of its most important cultural sites.

The Nanih Waiya Mound is considered the origin place of the Choctaw people. It dates back more than 2,000 years.

The mound is part of a state park that was closed due to lack of funds. Under a bill signed into law by Gov. Haley Barbour (R), the tribe will regain possession of the 150-acre site.

The tribe will ask for the land to be placed in trust, The Neshoba Democrat said.
