Mel Sheldon, the new chairman of the Tulalip Tribes of Washington, hopes to strike a balance between social services and economic pursuits.
Sheldon, 55, acknowledges concerns within the tribe that too much focus has been placed on business. During his campaign, he sought to appeal to members who wanted to tone down the "testosterone-driven" image of the board of directors.
A Vietnam veteran, Sheldon says the tribe won't be walking away from its investments, which include a $125 million hotel, $28 million administration building and $8 million museum.
