The Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin signed an agreement on Monday to reclaim some of its ancestral land.
The tribe, the state, the federal government and two historical societies will work together to clean up and preserve the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant. The tribe would receive about 1,500 acres of the 7,000-acre site.
"This is our property that our people once roamed on, lived on, hunted on, and planted on," said Ho-Chunk Vice President Wade Blackdeer, WKOW reported. "This represents something we lost a long time ago and now we may be able to re-acquire."
The tribe plans to reintroduce bison on its part of the site.
