Shelter for young Native women faces closure

A shelter in Vancouver, British Columbia, that helps Native girls and young women get off the streets faces closure due to the loss of government funds.

The Young Wolves Lodge will run out of money at the end of March. Since the government hasn't come up with a replacement funding source, the Urban Native Youth Association is worried that it will have to close the facility.

The lodge provides a safe home for female Natives ages 17 to 24. Resident Mercedes Demkiw said she doesn't know what she would do if it closed.

"You know this program saved my life. I probably would be dead without it," Demkiw told CBC News.
